Welcome to Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Corner Brook is a small city situated on the West Coast of Newfoundland; it is located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River. The population is 20,083, and it functions as a service center for Western and Northern Newfoundland. Winters are cold and snowy, summers are warm to hot but it doesn’t stop tourists from visiting. Corner Brook is a lovely place to visit anytime of the year. Explore the region from east, west, north and south. Be sure to make a visit to the Bay of Islands while you are exploring Corner Brook.
You will never be bored while staying in Corner Brook. There are lots to see and do, many places to eat, shop, stay and to get out for a night on the town from playing a game of pool to dancing the night away. Wondering how to get to Corner Brook? If you are already in Newfoundland, on the road there are four exits off the Trans Canada Highway. If you’re flying, the nearest airports are the Deer Lake Regional Airport which is 55 kilometers from Corner Brook and the Stephenville International Airport which is 83 kilometers from Corner Brook. Deer Lake Airport has Air Canada, West Jet, and Provincial Airlines. Stephenville Airport has Provincial Airlines. If you are traveling by Ferry the Marine Atlantic operates a ferry service from Port aux Basque which is 220 kilometers south west of Corner Brook. The Ferry leaves from Port aux Basque to North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Now you’re probably wondering where to eat, where to shop, where to stay, how to get around. As you read on you will know. There are many places to go eat with lots of variety of foods to choose from. With all the cafes, shops, family, fast food, takeout and fine dining your tastebuds will certainly be satisfied. There are way too many places to mention, but there is a huge selection from Chinese to Italian and from McDonalds to Pizza Delight. If you love a buffet then you can go to Pizza Delight or Jackie Tan’s. If you’re in the mood for fine dining or maybe delicious hand made pasta then you can go to the Wine Cellar or Sorrento’s. Feel like going for a coffee then you can head to Tim Horton’s or to Thistle’s Place Café where you can go on the internet while you enjoy your tea or coffee. Or gather the family together and head to Jungle Jim’s or Aroma’s Plus.
When it comes to shopping, there are more places to shop from, then there is to eat at. Not only can you eat till your hearts content from all the selections but you can also shop till your hearts content. Corner Brook has a huge shopping selection from the malls to the shops on West Street and Broadway which are the two main streets in the downtown area. Down on West Street and Broadway you can shop from locally-owned to retail stores. In the downtown area there are two malls, the Millbrook Mall and the Valley Mall. Love Walmart? Then you can go to Murphy Square on the east end of the city where you will find Walmart, Canadian Tire, Dominion, Staples Business Depot, Marks Workware House and other retail stores. If you want to do most of you’re shopping under one building then you will love the Corner Brook Plaza which has over 60 shops and many of them are a part of a national chain. Looking for some crafts or souvenirs? Then you will find them at Fancy That, Island Treasures, Newfoundland Emporium or retail and locally-owned stores.
Stuck for a place to stay? Then you don’t have to be with the many places to choose from. If you want to be close to McDonalds, Corner Brook Plaza, and Jungle Jims then you can stay at the Mamateek Inn or the Comfort Inn. If you want to be down on West Street close to stores and restaurants then you can stay at the Greenwood Inn and Suites. Or you can stay at the Hotel Corner Brook down on Main Street also close to stores and restaurants the hotel has a club and restaurant all in the same building and beautiful view of the Bay of Islands. If you’re more of nature a person then you can stay at the Glynmill Inn down the beautiful Cobb Lane where you can go for a nature walk around the Glynmill Pond.
Getting around in Corner Brook is easy, you can rent a car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car or Budget. You can get a taxi from Corner Brook Taxi, Birchy Taxi Cabs, City Cabs, and Star Taxi. Hop on the Corner Brook Transit, it’s the city’s public bus. Or you can walk; pretty much everything is in walking distance depending on where you are staying at. Walking can be lovely experience you can walk through the historic downtown area or take a stroll by the Corner Brook Stream Trail. The city also has splendid parks and trails to explore and enjoy while you are visiting like the Margaret Bowater Park located on O’Connell Drive as well as other beautiful ones, check with the Corner Brook Visitor Information Center located on 15 Confederation Drive for more information on touring the city, parks and trails.
If you’re the kind of person that likes to get out and play pool or go out dancing then you’re going to want to do it in Corner Brook. From dancing at Night Sounds up on Broadway to sitting down sipping on a cold delicious cocktail at Cheers Pub on Main Street, there are many more places, but that is for you to come and explore to fulfill your nightlife needs. If you like galleries, museums, and historic sites then you have to visit them throughout the city like Corner Brook Museum and Archives on 2 West Street. If your visiting in the Winter time and you enjoy skiing or snowboarding then you will want to go to Marble Mountain. It's about a 10 minute drive outside of Corner Brook, also while you are on the way to Marble Mountain stop into Steady Brook and check out the Marble Zip Tours. For the person that enjoys old, historic then you will like to see Broadway, it was the first shopping district built in the 1930s and also you will enjoy the downtown area. Look for heritage lights and marble inscriptions that give history to the unique heritage buildings.
So much beauty, history and attractions to be seen while visiting, you will never get bored, be hungry or even get stuck for a place to stay with so many places to eat, sleep, shop or dance or whatever it is you like to do. You will be in amazement as you drive around or walk on the exquisite red interlocking brick sidewalks looking at what is around you like historic buildings, big old beautiful trees that can probably tell a story because they have been around for so long.
