Labrador home of the wildlife, aboriginal, and European settlers who have traced the lands from the dawn of time, Labrador being the world’s last wilderness region is what entices you to the magic of the place. It unlocks and awakens your sense for adventure. Labrador is located in Canada on the Atlantic Ocean just north of Newfoundland. It borders the province of Quebec, and shares land with Nunavut and Killiniq Island. You have to explore the magic, spirits, and rugged beauty for yourself to appreciate what it has to offer. See the Northern Lights in the night sky when everything is black and everyone even the wildlife are snug in there beds. Discover vibrant colors of Green, Blue, Red, Pink, Purple, Orange, Magenta, Cyan and Yellow. The indigenous people once believed that the Northern Lights are the spirits of the dead dancing and waving in the sky. When you see them and just how beautiful they are the world around you becomes magical as you become in fixated with the colorful night dancers or spirits that we know as Northern Lights.
The people of Labrador are European settlers, Innu, Inuit, and the Métis. Innu formally known as the Naskapi-Montagnais Indians, Inuit are the direct descendants of a prehistoric hunting society that spread across Canada from Alaska, and the Métis are the descendants of European men and Inuit women. The word Métis means mixed. Inuit traditions that survive, grow, breathe there yours forever. The spirits of the people have soared on the waves, the wind and the land. You have to come and see the beautiful people, there culture, and there traditions to really get an experience of what it’s like in Labrador.
When you are in Labrador be sure to visit as many of the towns as you can, and Labrador City is a great place to stay. There is shopping mall, a grocery store, bowling alley, ice arena, and several bars and restaurants. Also there is an airport in the cities neighbor Wabush that has Air Canada Jazz, Air Labrador, and Provincial Airlines. There are also bakeries, cafes and bistros. If you want real espresso or frozen yogurt you can stop by The Bread Basket Bakery & Café located in the Carol Lake Shopping Centre where you can get that and much more. There are many fast food restaurants with food ranging from Pizza Delight to McDonalds and locally owned like DJ’s Restaurant Ltd where you can get pizza and other food selections to Heddy’s Restaurant where you can get a Varity of seafood to traditional Newfoundland dishes. There is also an Irish, Italian, French and International restaurant.
Wondering where to go for a night out? Well there is plenty to choose from. Whatever your adventurous heart desires and if you’re staying in Labrador City you can choose from Shooter’s Lounge that has beer, wine, and sprits to Zachery’s Piano Bar which features live music, food and drinks. You can also choose from pubs like Jarge’s Pub and The Drake’s Return Pub & Eatery where you can order tasty pub food and drinks to wash it down. Enjoy a game of pool with friends or friendly locals at McNally’s Billiards, Inc or dance the night away at Ka-Boulo Bar Discotheque (K-Bar) that has a lit dance floor, light show and full bar.
There are great places to stay after a night out, long flight or drive. You can stay at Carol Inn Labrador City which offers great amenities; non-smoking, air-conditioned rooms equipped with cable/satellite television, coffee maker and a complimentary newspaper, and more, or stay at Two Seasons Inn Labrador City that also has great amenities as well as high speed internet in the rooms, and the Inn is located close to shopping, restaurants, and banking. If you’re not a hotel or Inn person, maybe you would prefer a lovely Bed and Breakfast like Twin Cities Bed & Breakfast that has access to golf and hiking, as well as dog sled races and trails for skiing and snowmobiling during winter months. Then there is PJ’s Inn by the Lake B & B that offers rooms with private bathrooms, cable TV, Internet access, telephone and more.
Labrador has many outdoor activities for the laid back adventurous person and the adrenaline junkie adventurous person. If you are visiting during the winter stretch your legs with skiing or snowshoeing through the wilderness or zip through piles of snow on a snowmobile or try the more traditional way and go dog sledding. Maybe you would enjoy a Whale watching adventure, fishing in a peaceful pond tucked away deep in the woods where you might catch a glimpse of Moose, Black Bear, Caribou or other wildlife. Go kayaking or see nature’s creation of the big White Icebergs that have unique shapes carved by the wind and sea.
So when you come to Labrador and explore the people there culture, traditions and there land, you will be happy that you decided to take the marvelous journey to see for yourself. You will not only leave happy, relaxed, and entertained, or with pictures of a Whale or Iceberg. Or with a fresh fish from a deserted pond in your belly that you cooked over a campfire, but you will leave with your heart, soul and senses awakened from the beauty, the people, the wilderness and the Spirits that call Labrador home.
